Each year, humans release more than 30 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere worldwide. The greenhouse gas is produced, for example, during the burning of fossil fuels. The cooperation network "UseCO2" faces the challenge, to utilize carbon dioxide as raw material for a variety of everyday products. "UseCO2"-products are climate-friendly, sustainable and leave behind a smaller carbon footprint.

The network

"UseCO2" is a cooparation network funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The network aims to replace fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas and use instead carbon dioxid as raw material. To overcome this challenge, partners from industry and science work in joint R&D projects under the coordination of the IBB Netzwerk GmbH.

The concept

The partners develop technologies, to fix CO2 from industrial emissions or from the atmosphere and transfrom it into basic chemicals. These are used to produce everyday products such as synthetic fibres, lubricants, adhesives and plastics as well as fuels. Compared to their counterparts from petroleum, the new products leave behind a smaller "carbon footprint" or are even carbon-neutral.

Our incentive

The material use of CO2 is not only climate-friendly: With the new technologies, the network provides alternative solutions to produce independently of the availability of fossile fuels and independently of the fluctuating oil prizes. The network thus supports the transition from a petroleum-based to a sustainable society!

"UseCO2" is relevant for ...

  • ... research institutes and companies with innovative "UseCO2"-ideas, who search for project partners.
  • ... entrepreneurs, who deal with intermediate products from fossil oil or gas and consider sustainable alternatives.
  • ... interested people, who want to find out more about the material use of CO2.
